I promised it was coming and here it is The Inaugural Podcast of the The Simple Strategies for Startups Blog
And in this first episode we have Mr. John Fox.
John is president and founder of Venture Marketing. He has extensive hands-on experience as an entrepreneur and C-level new business developer for technology–enabled businesses. Get this…John has led the launch or re-launch of 44 companies, resulting in double and triple-digit growth for every client served.
But truth is in the interview, he said that number is pretty low now.
He’s been featured in numerous publications and radio programs, including BusinessWeek, Chicago Tribune, Crain’s Chicago Business, Crain’s B2B, PCWeek/eWeek, the Advertising Show, and he’s a columnist for the Huffington Post.
His work has been endorsed by marketing gurus such as Seth Godin, Guy Kawasaki, Perry Marshall, Al Ries, Ben McConnell, and etc.
He is an author, speaker, and a really great guy.
In this interview we talk about:
- The main mistakes startups make when going to market
- Why most startups focus on painting the product than selling the product (ouch!!)
- Why the best customers are those who DONT know you
- Why he will ONLY work with the “champion” of the company
- Why he uses a 19 point…yes I am not kidding you…a 19 point system in screening customers and what you can learn from it.

Good. Very thorough but too long for me. Don’t have that much time, but many will. Good job.
I appreciate the honesty TC…
This is a real great interview Mike!
Thanks Darren I’m glad you enjoyed it. John was really an awesome first guest!
Michael great first Podcast, very professionally made and put together. Your questions were on point and you came out with a bang with your first guest. Absolutely awesome! John is such a humble mentor leader and we all in business strive to have such humility.
I am sure you listen to Michael Hyatt’s podcast, so only thing I would suggest is to create an intro audio to the podcast. Otherwise, you rocked it and absolutely made it happen. Great work!
Lincoln,
I appreciate that.
John is extremely humble! Talking to him before and after humbles me. I’m like “wow! This guy has achieved so much success and is so down to earth. Becoming a person like him (and Christ…let me throw that out there…is a huge life goal)
You’re right. I actually do need an intro. This was first one so I was kind of banging my head trying to figure it out. So I just went with a free conference call recording and wp plugin. As the podcast grows I do want to make it more sophisticated: an intro is definitely in the works, not to mention I do want t get it on Itunes.
Thanks again Lincoln!
You want to look at the launch of your podcast as you would any product launch. You’ll need to pre-plan the marketing campaign before you release the first episode. Build buzz for it. Built desire-based tension.
