Great interview Mike…and Mike lol!
Thanks Rita! Mike was awesome!
Rita, thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.
This comment is intended for business owners and new start up businesses. Who to hire after you begin your business.
Usually, it isn’t the Owner of a business that is the problem. Usually it is his poor choice of supervisors; trust me. These new bosses, so to speak, will sadly hire folks of a much lessor caliber than themselves so as to retain their position at the top of their food chain or money train.
You see if owners would really take their businesses seriously, and do all of their own hiring or at least look at their managerial new hires, they would see a pattern emerging that is KILLER for businesses. The boss doesn’t have the interest, most times, of his owner’s business at heart – as much as he wants to feed his own ego, without competition from another hire of his that might do as well at his job – ouch.
Owners are shirking their responsibilty to give it over into the hands of someone in leadership who is threatened with their job most of the time. The boss makes the big bucks and keeps those on his staff who will do his bidding so he stays at the helm. It makes little difference to the boss, if the business makes it or flounders as long as he is still getting a pay check. He doesn’t look at the long range prospects of the business shutting down some day.
The employees I would hire for a business that I would run would all look about the same in terms of their drive and ambition. It is good for bosses and their new hires to compete in the work place, and it is like checks and balances for the sake of the business. Owners are not here to simply secure the position for a boss with their firm. If I were the owner, I would look long and hard at my bosses first, and then those he hires, whether friends or relatives. Usually these folks are less inclined to compete for his job, and he is safe for now! BUT THE BUSINESS WILL SUFFER IN THE LONG RUN, I kid you not.
I have lots of Horror stories to share on this front, but I will leave them for another day’s commentary. I’m not advocating getting rid of bosses or leaders in a company, but the owner better be looking closely at who his manager(s) hires. (Are these the best choices for the positions to keep his business up and running?) Over time, probably not!!!

OWNERS: “Time to hire a better work force! When you hire your bosses and leaders for your company, why not hire the people to work with him or her also. The competition will do them good. Now you have folks who will all be working hard for a better business, instead of for themselves. Cheers! ” D.G.Ford
